Length, or file size? Sometimes files are encoded in a way that wastes space, but failing that, I guess you could decrease the resolution...?

Youtube doesn't take .avi. Neither does livevideo.
Save it in something smaller

Save them to .wmv files. Youtube will take them then. (Put them in Windows Movie Maker, that will automatically save them as .wmv files.)

Youtube has been having trouble lately. I'd go to troubleshooting and look there. I had that problem a few times.
