The animation is indeed of low quality, but when you think about how that came to be (the studio fire) and how great the voice acting is, it seemed to (mostly) make up for it.

ALOT of questions are left unanswered, like Millie's exact relationship with Kane. It was alluded to that Alicia and Stargazer were siblings, but that doesn't necessarily give answer to everything. Alicia obviously had at least one child, and that child had Kane, which is pretty evident (although I wish I knew what happened to Kane's parents), but Millie's family line is skewed. because Stargazer is a moron and cloned himself, so is Millie the daughter of the clone or the original? And did the original have children or did he beget Millie onto a younger woman? In short, even with all of the holes, it's safe to say that Millie and Kane are AT LEAST cousins. So why, then, did I get such a romantic feel at the end? It makes me wonder if Millie knew from the start about being related to Kane, and if she did, if she could help getting so attached.

It almost made me cry when Canal was freaking out over Kane's attempted merging with Swordbreaker. Gotta love Megumi. She's such a fantastic voice actress. Canal's death DID make me cry. Alot. I had NO idea the history that Canal and Kane had shared, and learning it all at the end made it even sadder. It made me wonder what kind of history Canal and Alice had, since, at the end of Alice's life, Canal seems more like a mere shadow of herself (the same shadow that helps Kane destroy Dark Star). It made me wonder if Canal was created FOR Kane, to make up for Alice's death, and if so, how did she do it? Or, more importantly, how long (if at all) did she know she was going to die, and did that give her time to make Canal's program?

"I wonder if computers go to heaven." THAT MADE ME CRY.

Which got me thinking more. On the Black World, Lost Ships are the equivalent of the Gods and Monsters of the Red World (THAT much is evident with the names of Dark Star and his "weapons"). In saying that, was Canal really Volphied? Or was Volphied a separate part of Canal, or vice-versa? Canal answered to the name, and uses it as her last name, but when Kane attempts to merge with Swordbreaker, a second voice, similar to hers, overrides her commands. She even screams, "Aren't you ME?" Which really makes me think that Canal is a separate entity all on her own.

Finishing the series makes me realise why there is no fanfiction on the series: it's simply impossible. The ending is too clean, to well-done, and while it's possible to ESTIMATE what happens afterward, it would be awkward to so, especially since so many holes are poked into the plot.

We KNOW that Swordbreaker returns to Alicia's home world and that Kane is there to reunite with Millie, but what we DON'T know is if Canal was recovered, and what kind of state or form she is in. Would she be a child again? THAT would be interesting. And, I think, a reunion between Millie and Kane would be awkward. Where do they stand? Is it romantic or merely familial?

Oh, how I long to read the novels. I'm sure I would be able to figure out the holes then. But for now, I'll settle with the crappily translated manga =P.

All in all, I enjoyed it. I wish they had gone into detail about the pasts of the characters, and that was pretty frustrating, but it's still a wonderful story.
