Follow up and the last word

Okay. So as I'm sure you all could see, I cashed in my two cents about the now-infamous Gabaldon-foot-shooting incident.
I've read through a lot of different forums.
I've viewed it from both sides from different authors of all genres, whether I have read them or not.
And the final verdict is that I haven't changed my mind, at all. I still think fanfiction is harmless unless someone is trying to cash in on your ideas.
I respect that some authors request a fanfiction black-out, and fine - that is the exception. If you don't listen to the creator of your fanfic's source, you're a dick - end of story. If you're a creator that squicks over the thought of fanfic, you have ever right to request that people piss off and don't post their stuff.
But you don't have a right to publicly insult and castigate those who enjoy fanfiction, including reading it, writing it, or contributing to it. Or, correction: You have a right to say whatever you want to say about people who write fanfic, but don't be surprised if thousands of people decide to rip you several new assholes as a result. Free speech and all that.
I reacted in my post out of the anger I was feeling, and I don't regret that. I used strong language to convey how I felt, and that is that. Just like Gabaldon, I used harsh and mean wording to convey my point.
Personally? All this has done is stunt my writing, to be honest. I haven't been able to write anything since reading this whole kerfluffle. Pathetic, but true. I take things way too personally and when something I like gets attacked, I kind of take it...personally...and end up getting a block about it. Oh well.
So yeah. That's my last thought on it.
