I can see what you mean about The Beach not being filler, and it providing a lot of insight into the minds of the villains. I think it did kind of show the cracks in Azula's mind/personality well before the creators made it obvious.
I'm going to skip the Maiko parts because -- ahem, I may not be distant enough in my dislike of that pairing to give a good review. ;D
I agree that the Li and Lo parts = hilarity. Also, their younger versions have more than a passing resemblance to Azula. No?
I dunno. In all, I think this episode is half brilliance for it's portrayal of the characters and half cringe-worthy because there's this... feeling of trying too hard that I couldn't ever shake while watching it. It's such a departure from the theme and tone of the rest of the series that it just ends up standing out for it's positive and negative qualities.
