Twelve Kingdoms was a pleasant surprise for me. I picked up the novel while I was still working in a bookstore, and I found myself totally blown away by the world and the story (this was before TokyoPop stopped caring about the quality of the translations, and it was actually good. I will forever hate them for fucking up the fourth book, forever). Even though Youko is really irritating and a crybaby in the start, the harsh reality of the world she finds herself in allows her to grow up really fast - and wonderfully.

It should be noted that in the original series, Sugimoto Yuka and Asano never went with Youko to the Twelve Kingdoms, and she went alone. While they series was rather clever in finding ways to fit them into the series, there are still some plotholes surrounding their circumstances. Just keep that in mind when watching it, though don't be worried that it will take from the story - because it doesn't.
