OH SHIT!:

"Nickelodeon said in a release that “The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra.”

Korra’s quest eventually leads her to Republic City–the epicenter of the world of “Avatar.” A metropolis powered by steampunk-type technology, the city is inhabited by people from all nations. Korra finds that Republic City suffers from rampant crime and is also dealing with an anti-bender revolt. Korra is tutored by Aang’s son, Tenzin, i[n] the ways of airbending.

THIRD EDIT:

From here:

"The Legend of Korra" takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

*squeeeeee*

(Ahem)

The buildings in the background are interesting. The colors are pretty desaturated, but the smokestacks and architecture make me think Fire Nation. The Earth Kingdom never built anything like those skyscrapes and the technology needed to make such tall buildings would be in-line with with their general industrialization.

I thought the same thing. I really can't tell where she's standing. It almost looks like a mix of everything, really.

I just hope the Fire Nation isn't dicking around in this one.

Do you know? I think this might be more modern. Take a look at the buildings all around her, and what she's standing on - it looks really modern to me.

Maybe Bryke is finally able to do their sci-fi series after all =P

I think it might be too. I was struck by how modern nearly everything around her looked. I think it's safe to say this series is set in the future of the Avatar world.

I'm still amazed by how incredible everything looks right now!

It sounds like you could call it "Avatar: The Last Alchemybender". Not that that's a bad thing. I looove steampunk.

It just makes me think they'll have to throw an FMA reference in there somewhere.

In the artbook, they mention (and show) that the earliest concepts of Aang, Appa, and Momo were very sci-fi influenced. It's no surprise that they take the chance now to make it that way while still keeping to the world.

I think I'll hide from fandom though because of the wank with TLA and then there will be NEW wank. Can you imagine the combined wank of it all?

There already is wank.

So far I've seen.

-OH NOES THEY CALLED HER "strong" AND "independent" SHE'S GONNA BE A KATARA CLONE.
- STEAMPUNK SUCKS
- IT'S JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL, NO CREATIVITY.
- BEAST MACHINES

and lest the shippers feel left out (actual quotes this time)

>AND YES, THERE IS SOME BAD NEWS FOR US ZUTARA FANS. APPARENTLY, KATARA AND ZUKO'S LOVE CHILD GOT RAISED BY AANG. THIS IS VERY SAD NEWS INDEED. HOPEFULLY, SOME FIC WILL BE FORTHCOMING SOON TO EXPLAIN THIS DRAMA.

>JUST LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE MENTIONS OF THE DREADED KATAANG SHIP, ONLY THAT TENZIN IS AANG'S SON.

>HE PROBABLY WENT AND FUCKED SONG OR SOMETHING AFTER KATARA TURNED HIM DOWN FOR ZUKO.

>THOUGH CONSIDERING THEY NEVER MENTION WHO THE MOM IS, I'MMA JUST LIVE IN MY HEADCANON THAT KATAANG BROKE UP AT SOME POINT AND WHILE KATARA AND ZUKO HAD SEXYTIMES, TOPH AND AANG HOOKED UP AND TENZIN AND ANY SIBLINGS WERE BORN. :B

>THE ARTICLE DID NOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT AANG AND KATARA BEING TOGETHER, JUST THAT HIS AIRBENDING SON IS ONE OF KORRA'S TEACHERS.

I find this wank fascinating, mostly because I've never been in a living fandom before.

The story's aspect of Korra being a hothead under the tutelage of an older master bender reminds me of the Zuko/Iroh dynamic. I wonder if the creators purposely harkened back to that relationship, considering how popular it was in the original series.

Sadly some of the juiciest (non shipping) wank was on 4chan's /co/* board, so it's already gone by this point. That was the epicenter of the oh no "strong" "independent" whining came from. With a juicy helping of "omg male oppression because all Avatar males are wimps", and mix with the slightest sprinkle of "women are biologically different".

That was also "this is totally a rehash of canon" wank.

*Not a place I usually visit, but I heard there was wank and couldn't resist.

From: [identity profile] clockwerkchaos.livejournal.com
Actually I* said all avatar males (as in every male in the series) is a wimp. No, really, there are people who actually argue this. Which has to be a bizarre twist of logic. The most powerful person in the series is Aang, but they get around that by saying he's emotionally weak. Then they get around people like Zuko and Jet by arguing they aren't physically as powerful as the women. So remember, if a lady shows up a guy at anything, that means the guy is a wimp.

But the "Male Avatar" is also a bit of a meme. The general idea is that Kyoshi was badass, Roku wasn't (conveniently ignoring the "tear up the throne room" scene) and work from there. (Kuruk was lazy, Yangchen was successful and willing to kill). They then thrown in Aang a wimp because he shows emotion/doesn't kill.

*Well not me, obviously. I mean I said that they said... etc

To me, strength varies, really. I'm a little off-kilter to speak very eloquently, but I'll try my best.

Basically, you can be strong in different ways. You can be physical like Kyoshi (who also had a penchant for politics), or you can be resourceful and monetary like Roku (although fuck he used force when he had to). Yangchen clearly killed; that much is evident in her answer to Aang in the finale, but does that make her stronger than Aang, who chose not to? Kuruk was lazy, but he had to spend his entire afterlife regretting and hunting for redemption. To me, in different ways, each Avatar is strong, regardless of sex or method.

What I found particularly stunning in the show was that the creators were willing to show that a male can still be strong and badass and still cry. When I was growing up, I honestly can count all of the cartoons I was raised with that showed that. The whole "Men can't cry" bullshit is so tiresome that it makes me so glad that ATLA never stooped to that; they weren't afraid to show the heroes shedding tears when they felt sad or angry or happy.

Oddly enough I'm really enthusiastic about the steampunk. Normally I'd be ambivalent about it, but them specifically citing Hong Kong and Shanghai means that's well get a fairly unique feel. Plus personally I like the idea of a growing, evolving world rather than the medieval stasis trap fantasy often falls into.

Though I must admit some personal reservations about the anti-bender plot. But it's all in how it's done.
