Name a character and I'll tell you three (or more) facts about them from my own personal headcanon.
I know I've done this before, but I'm bored and need a distraction. Just make sure I know the fandom before you name someone =O

Date: 2011-03-14 11:30 pm (UTC)Jade:
1. She didn't come from a militant family. Joining the army made her the black sheep - something that made her want to be all the more determined to do her best.
2. When Greavheart left the army, she also left - for a while. It was only realising that she was happiest (as much as she could be) in the army that she returned and strove to get to the highest position possible - to prove to him and to her that not everyone dies in the army.
3. As Queen (Lady?) Jade, her temper gets into some messes - behind doors. In front of people, she is the image of calm, the image of cool and detached monarchy. Behind doors, she's just as violent, loud, and passionate that she was during the war. Graveheart plays a heavy part in internal diplomacy.
Graveheart:
1. He and Mica were raised by their mother - his dad was killed in a mining accident. It's why both he and Mica sought out another path, both out of sadness and a hope that they wouldn't die like their dad did. When Mica died, he went to mining, because he realised that everyone would die no matter what - he might as well do what he knew the best.
2. Jade was his OTL. He never dated after he left the army, never even slept with anyone else. Although he assumed that they would never date again, he didn't want to date anyone else either - although he was asked several times.
3. Graveheart meant it when he declared himself content with being the leader of the Alliance, and just that. He never strives to be ruler and enjoys not only helping Jade out, but loves the challenge of balancing the five planets' peace. For the first time, he's proud of what he does, because for once, there is no death directly related to it.

Date: 2011-03-15 01:13 am (UTC)Wow, you headcannon is both very like and unlike mine in various ways. Weird.
My thoughts, if you're curious:
Jade:
1. Total opposite in my head; Jade was born into Quarrior family. The determination, stubbornness and occasional wild-streak stemming from her frustration that everyone expected her to grow up into a carbon copy of her mother and also become a leading general. The relationship between she and her mother was strained at times (mostly because they were both piss stubborn), but her home life was stable and the two were close despite the occasional headbutting. Her mother was killed prior to the series, during a Bone raid (was taken out by one of their sneaky explosives)... the central reason Jade develops a severe life-long bias against the planet (though befriending Sternum does help ease this post-series).
It might seem an obvious route, and I can certainly understand why some fans would develop a differing backstory to accentuate Jade's individuality. But her desensitization to violence/death, strong identification as a soldier of Rock and her unquestioned (for a while anyway) and unshakable loyalty to the crown indicate to me someone who was Quarrior-conditioned from the get-go. Is she a typical Rock soldier? Yes. But I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing and I always viewed Jade as being a well-rounded example of the Quarrior mindset - strengths, weaknesses and all. And giving her a non-military background in my mind somewhat depreciates that.
(BTW, don't take all the above as a critique against your fanon... it's not. Just an explanation my views and the reasoning behind them. Every fan interprets the source material differently and often comes up with opposing theories. And that's awesome, not bad. :)
That said, I completely agree with #3. #2 is very interesting and I like it. What do you suppose she did during that time away?
Graveheart:
1. Similar, only in mine both their parents were killed and they were raised by their mothers' family. However, he became somewhat estranged from them when the resource wars broke out again and he opted to join Jade in the military (both out of genuine concern for the welfare of his planet and because he's an incurable romantic; a decision they never entirely agreed with.
It's damned harsh, but Graveheart strikes me as a man who puts huge emphasis on the importance of family. And I somehow doubt he would have accepted his exile in "On the Rocks" quite so easily if he had any immediate family still living. (It also nicely explains his epic freak-out when Mica was killed... losing the last remaining member of your immediately family to yet another tragedy is enough to make anyone go nuts)
Again, completely agree with #2 and #3. He and Sternum did actually click very quickly once the the misunderstanding was cleared up, despite the jealousy issues. I can see them easily becoming the gender-flipped version of the Dot/Mouse friendship in ReBoot.
Also, GH was shy and reclusive as hell as a wee little thing. Though he grew out of it quickly... mainly because Mica was ridiculously cheery and made him grow out of it. ;)
Also, a strong part of my Rock fanon revolves around the idea that the planet had a very strong commoner/solider caste tradition in its past. But the growing resource shortages and increasing outbreaks of war with the rest of the Cluster took a toll on the population and the class divide was abolished as a matter of necessity. (However, the tensions are definitely still there...) Jade and GH's friendship is thus seen as more of a bizarre oddity than anything else.
Annnnnd that ended up way longer than I had intended. Er, oops.

Date: 2011-03-15 01:18 am (UTC)I think with Jade, she's very personal in her pain. I imagine she would spend time exploring the world, trying to think, or - probably more likely - travelling the world's bars, purposely getting into fights to vent off steam.
It's very true about the caste system. It's another reason why his changing of professions is so important to his character, because in many ways he's giving up a ton to be a miner.

Date: 2011-03-15 01:39 am (UTC)My version of Jade's father is a somewhat cantankerous Arrowhead engineer (ideally voiced in my head by the late DeForest Kelley) and is where Jade gets her sarcasm and bluntness from. (This is actually something of a case of real-life-writes-plot. As I'm similar: my personality and it's accompanying flaws come from my mom, but my mannerisms are much closer to Dad's)
probably more likely - travelling the world's bars, purposely getting into fights to vent off steam.
ROFL. CANON. XD

Exactly. It's as central to his identity as Jade's profession is to hers.
And I just belated realized that my Graveheart/Sternum commentary was supposed to be for your reply to
